Question

My little boy is 1 yr old. He has excema and food allergies. However for the last two days he has not been himself and his skin has come out very red and blotchy. He isn''t eating or sleeping and under his eyes are very swollen. Usually when i take him to the doctors if they can''t explain it they say it''s just something viral and to give him calpol and brufen. Should i do this or get him checked out?

Answer

Hi,

If his symptoms continue a consult with a pediatric allergist/immunologist may be helpful, especially to evaluate his diet for potential allergens. However a virus cannot be ruled out as many of the common childhood viruses may be associated with skin rashes. The only treatment is really to keep the child as comfortable as possible with a little pain medication to control muscle aches and fever and keep him well-hydrated. You do not mention fever which would point more to a virus than the general sense of unwellness associated with allergies, although a low grade fever could be present in either. The swollen eyes may be an effect of being ill in general, but is also very consistent with allergies.

Hopefully this information will be helpful. It is always difficult to watch your child suffer and not know how to help and allergies pose a particular challenge when it comes to medical treatment. A specialist should at least be helpful in better identifying those allergens that can be better controlled or avoided. Diet can be a big source of problems for the child's maturing immune system and gastrointestinal tract. Than you.
