Hi XX XXXXX XXX,

One of two things can be happening here. Either the diaphram in the fuel pump on the side of the engine is busted and pushing fuel into the engine, OR the carburetor bowl float is stuck and fuel is syphoning into the intake and down the cylinders past the rings and into the oil pan. If the engine seems to run ok, I would bet on the first choice. The first choice is also a more likely cause than a float in the carb.

I hope this information helps. If I can assist further feel free to reply here. Thanks for posting on JA.com

Reply to autotech36's Post: Would you still have good presure on the gas flow from the fuel pump? Also this van has been setting for 6 years or so. To start it you have to hold foot pedal to the floor.
Thanks Richard

Answer

Yes XX XXXXX XXX, it is possible to still have sufficient pressure to run the engine.... mainly because it is carbureted and not fuel injected. A carburetor typically only requires about 7 psi of fuel preuusre to operate correctly. Most mechanical fuel pumps can pump between 10-30 psi.
