Hello,
On E36 convertible tops, when the conv top jams on the storage lid cover it is most likely going to be a problem with your tension straps. Over time the tension straps in the conv top stretch out and cause the rear of the top not to lift up as high as it should.
Unfortunently this is not a cheap repair. The tension straps run along the whole top above the headliner. It will probably be around $1000-$1500 dollars to replace the straps (most of the price will be labor).
There is a cheap fix available that I have heard of. I found someone posted the fix on Bimmerforums.com. Look at post #16. It basically is installing velcro stretch straps to assist the worn/stretched tension straps.
