All the valid sources say a duck's quack echoes just like any other sound. I can say I've heard the quack echo too when the circumstances are right.

just so you have more than my word for it.
It is possible as mostly ducks are found on open water or in open areas around water that this legend started simply because the ducks were not around places that would reflect back the sound or were on a shore area where noise from waves would cover the echo.
