Question

A gelding I recently purchased has been comming up with abcesses not only on his feet but else where I have owned him approx 2 weeks have in a stall that is cleaned daily he has access to fresh water and is fed alfalfa twice a day. I have been soaking his feet in a mixture of epsom salt warm water and iodine and just started a course of penicillin G at 20 cc per day. The gelding weighs approx 1100 pounds and is in good shape other than the abcesses. The place where he came from was ill kept he was literally in a pigs pen when I picked him up that was dry but filled with all imaginable debris. Is there any thing else I can do to help get him over this infection?, and is what I am doing the right thing?

Info Request

Hello,

I can help you with this, but first I need more information:

1) Can you describe in more detail the abscesses he is getting "elsewhere"?
2) Are his feet overgrown? Does he have too much heel, or "slipper toes"? Are there any rings in the hoof wall? Is he shod or barefoot? Is he getting abscesses in all 4 feet? If not, which feet have the abscesses?
3) Is he currently sound, or lame? Are you giving him any exercise - e.g. turn-out or hand walking?
4) How have you been treating his hoofs after you soak them?
5) Did you have a vet examine him before purchase (pre-purchase exam)?
6) Has he been seen by a vet since coming down with the abscesses? If not, who advised you to give him antibiotics?
