Question

I think our cat may now have rabies. My wife has been giving the cat an oral antibiotic pill for a week or so. Should she be vaccinated for rabies? The cat hasn''t git her or anything, but she has had to place the pill into the pack of the cat''s mouth.

Answer

Hello XXXXXXXXX,

Rabies is a very serious disease. It is 100% fatal once symptoms start.

Since you suspect the cat has rabies, you need to take it to the vet immediately - this very instant. They can help determine if this is likely rabies, and if it is the cat needs to be immediately euthanized and then tested to determine if it is indeed rabies. If you have any other pets they will need to be quarentined unless you can prove they were properly vaccinated for rabies.

If the cat has rabies then your wife needs to immediately start the series of post-exposure shots to prevent her from developing rabies. The regular "vaccine" shot isn't sufficient, it needs time for the body to develop the antibodies that protect against rabies. Once someone is exposed to rabies they need the series of shots instead. Having one's hands in the mouth of an animal that had rabies is exposure because rabies is transmitted in saliva. They may want you to have the shots as well if you have been handling the cat at all, or if your wife hasn't been thoroughly washing her hands after handling the cat - you might also be exposed. If they suggest you get the shots, don't argue!

Because rabies is 100% fatal, rabies isn't something you mess with or "wait and see". Take the cat to the vet NOW. Follow the instructions from the vet and if you are told to go get shots, do not pass Go, do not collect $200, go directly to the doctor or hospital and get the shots immediately.
