Question

I purchased a new 2005 Sebring conv. I only have 3,300 miles. It got to the point that the card wasn''t starting after 2 weeks of inactivity. April 23rd, I borught it back to the dealer. They said the battery was OK, but replaced it anyway. * days later, the car wouldn''t start again. Only after 8 days, with a new battery. Today they checked the "whole" system Everything OK. They say that the prob. is due to inactivity. The computers drain the bat.; the only solution is to drive the car at least once a week.

If they checked it for a draw and found none, then they may be correct, the newer cars do pull down the battery if they sit too long from all the computer memory. There are several alternatives. If you have a way to plug in AC near the car you can get a small battery maintainer for less than $30.00 that will put a small charge on the battery all the time. If the car sits outside you can buy a solar powered maintainer that will put a small charge on whenever it's sunny, in fact VW uses these when they ship cars and store cars for that very reason.

Answer

If I was looking at your car I would perform a long term parasitic draw test over a few hours. The possibility exists that one of the control units in your car is either not going to "sleep" or is waking back up after the car sits for a while. For instance Land Rovers have a problem if parked near airports, their keyless entry system keeps waking up every time a plane uses it's radio and kills the battery. Rental car places also have problems if the keyless remotes from one car wakes up all the cars around it and kills their batteries. If that test shows everything is normal you may need to find a reasonable storage alternative to keep the battery up.
