Question

I have a ''97 Camaro. The starter no longer runs when turning the key. I hotwired it from the battery and it runs like a champ and starts the car, however the engine dies immediately. I''m wondering if there is a common circuit or component that that would affect the starter circuit and fuel injection (?) that I could check. I''m considering the anti theft circuit. Any insights?

Okay check your security light when ignition is on, Does it stay on or flash? Its sounding like you have a problem with the security system. Most likely it is the lock cylinder where the key goes in. There are 2 wires on the back of it that run through steering column. One or both wires break and the cylinder cant read the key. The dealer has a special tool to diagnose it. It can bypass various parts of the system, to pinpoint which component failed. It is usually the lock cylinder. To check it yourself would require removing the airbag, steering wheel, and other parts requiring special tools. You may want to take it to a shop or dealer who can properly check it out for you. The system disables your starter. If i can help further or you need more info just let me know. Thanks Eric

I had basically reached the same conclusion. Does the security system also disable any part of the fuel system? Let me know if you get a chance.
Thanks

Answer

I know for sure it does disable the starter, i dont believe it disables the fuel, although it may because without the pcm seeing rpm like when cranking it wont turn on the fuel pump. Good Luck, Thanks and let me know if i can help you further. Eric
