Question

You can tell I'm a real landlubber. I'm writing a novel about my 17th century grandmother who emigrated from England, sailed into Boston Harbor, and then boarded a sloop to sail to Southampton, Long Island. If they then move to Babylon, Long Island (1657) and take the sloop's crew with them, where would the crew live? and what might the crew do during times when they weren't sailing/shipping to other places? The area was pretty much wildnerness at that time (1657).

If you take a cue from the settlements of the time (Jamestown, Roanoke, etc.). They would likely need to build some kind of encampment, sort of like a fort. There would still have been some threat from the native population and possibly even pirates along the coast. Since sailors of the day tended to be good at wood fabrication and repair, building a settlement would be fairly easy for them. As for what to do when not shipping out, back then I would suspect most of their time would be consumed with survival. Food would need to be grown, hunted, or caught. Wintertime would be taken up with sail and rigging repairs and likely hauling the boat or heading south to keep from ice damage.

Sorry, the woman I'm writing about is a Puritan. A long way from the wicked women you have in mind, unfortunately.;0)
