Question

I have a 1990 Firebird with a 3.1L V6 engine that was rebuilt. It will not start and sounds like the timing is way off or that maybe the valves are not opening properly. There were no timing marks made as far as where things were set before the engine was broken down. How do I set the timing and check the valve settings.

  1. Bring No. 1 cylinder to firing position and align the timing marks on the front cover and harmonic balancer. You can make sure the distributor is set correctly at this time. Adjust exhaust valves on cylinders No. 1, 2 and 3 by backing off the rocker arm nut until you can just spin the push rod.
  2. Tighten the rocker arm nut until the pushrod just stops spinning with your fingers and then tighten the rocker arm 1 ½ turns. Repeat adjustment on intake valves for cylinders No. 1,5,and 6.
  3. Turn the crankshaft one revolution and line up the marks on the balancer and the timing cover again. This will be No. 4 cylinder firing position. Adjust the exhaust valves on cylinders 4, 5, and 6. Adjust the intake valves on cylinders No. 2,3, and 4.
