Question

My nine year old female Border Collie X has been coughing/gaging all day like she has something stuck in her throat. When we go out for walks all she wants to do is eat grass. We noticed a soft lump on her chest earlier as well. Any ideas what this could be. I am going to call the Vet in the morning and try to get her in asap.

Answer

Dear XXXXXX: I don't know if the soft lump on her chest has anything to do with the coughing and gagging or eating grass. Dogs will often eat grass when they have an upset stomach and then they'll usually vomit the grass. The coughing and gagging could be kennel cough or could be because she is trying to clear out her throat. It could be more serious. Your vet will start with a physical exam and then decide if a chest and/or neck x-ray are needed. I think getting in today for an exam is warranted. If they say they are "booked" tell them she's acting like there's something stuck in her throat. That's usually considered something that can't wait. Let me know if you have more questions. Best wishes.
