Question

My greyhound went out for a wee last night, I heard her yelp & went to the door, she had trouble getting up the 3 steps, and wimpered when she put weight on her right front leg. We assumed that she had pulled a muscle or sprained a joint, but she started trembling a lot. I thought she may have been bitten, and thorougly inspected her limb, but have found no sign of a wound. She has laid about all day today, appears to be able to walk (slowly) without wimpering, but she keeps trying to hide, and lays on the floor (or stands) just shaking all the time.

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear that your Greyhound is having this issue. Being that she is shaking, I would suggest having her into your vet to be seen. Shaking can indicat pain, reaction to something she ingestion or was bit by, or a nerve issue. Pinced nerves in the neck/back are relatively common and can cause limping. Spider bites are also another isssue that can cause lethargic behavior and limping, there generallhy will be a bump if one is present though. Consider holding off on the Ibuprofren until you talk to your vet. In some dogs it cause stomach issues (bleeding etc). Having her seen by the vet would be in her best interest as the issue would need to be seen face to face to be pin pointed. Fortuantly, all of the above are treatable when caught in a timely manner. I hope she's doing better soon. -Robyn

We do not have any harmful spiders here, but could she have been bitten by a snake or a rodent?, I can find no bumps, would there be any swelling? - the shaking has calmed down now, but she is very quiet, and she ate her dinner, which she tends to leave when her stomach is even slightly upset - normal excrement this morning also.

Answer

Hi,

Thanks for the additional information. A snake or rodent bite woud likely leave a visable mark and swelling. As you are not seeing these, it may have been a pinched nerve in her neck or spine. Even though she is eating well and may now seem more at ease, you may want to have this investigated. If she has an issue of the neck/spine, your vet may recommend treatment to avoid future problems (such as reduced activity, not jumping on beds, medication in the case of a flare etc). I hope she continues to feel better and if you need any other information, let me know. -Robyn
