Question

Dan: I beat on the tank as suggested by a friend. afterward the fuse no longer blows and motor starts fine. Could it have been the sending unit arm...stuck in the empty position.   Otherwise I dont understand why beating on the tank solved the problem.

Answer

By beating on the tank you have eliminated the short in the circuit and allowed the pump to operate normally. I think you will find once the fuel pump module is removed from the tank the two wires going to the pump itself are shorted against each other and wonder how the truck didn't blow up (the wires are submerged in fuel so no explosion will occur). Replace the fuel pump module (includes the pump, sending unit for the gage and fuel tank pressure sensor for the EVAP system).
