Hi there,

First of all, the AMC Cherokees are notorious for a long crank time (like 2-3 full seconds), so I wanted to let you know. But it sounds like you have something else going on.

You most likely have a fule pump going bad. I see it all the time on older Cherokees with long crank times.

I would recommend checking the fuel pressure with a fuel pressure guage with the key on. It should jump up to around 40 psi very quickly and hold.

If it moves up slowly, or does not hold pressure, you have a bad pump.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions!
