Question

I have a bullmastiff she is preg. she is either.... 63, 61, 59, or 58 days preg. Because we did an AI four different times. I have been taking her temp (more that she would like me too) about four times aday. Her temps have been as follows: Saturday 98.9 and 98.9 Sunday 110.01, 99.5, and 99, Monday-today 101, 99, 99.7. Saturday night she was very anxious and would not sit still, lastnight she would sleep for about 2 hours and then get up and move around then lay back down, get up move around lay back down so on and so on. She wasn't panting alot but breathing very heavy and then she would moan a little. I then noticed a bugerry clear medium sized goupy something that she had discharged. She has since then had NO other discharge. She isn't eating a lot and now sleeps quit a bit. How long do you think I have before she goes into hard labor and starts to deliver?

Answer

You always count the date from the first insemination whether doing it natural or AI.
I would take her in for an x-ray to see what is going on with the puppies. It is quite possible in this breed to have a pup with a head to big for natural delivery.
It sounds like with what you observed that she broke her water when you saw the mucous last night. She should have had a pup within an hour of that.
If she has been panting like she was warm she was likely in early labor at that point.
It is safe to x-ray the pups at this age and if nothing else it will tell you if any are in the birth canal position and how many you will end up waiting up for. An x-ray may also show you a big pup blocking the birth canal and let you know a c-section will be needed to save mom and pups.
Check her color to see if she has gums or tongue that look white, blue, or gray looking where they are normally pink, has a slow color refill if you press on a pink area of gum or tongue. If that is going on or she is becoming lethargic and non responsive to you then I'd definitely get her in to see her vet or an emergency vet.
If she starts hard contractions you should see a pup arrive within 20 minutes of full time hard labor and again if not its time to see the vet.
These sites go over the whelping process in pictures and give info on when its time to see the vet

She has already had an x-ray she is having at least 6 pups- the vet could only see six. He said that sometimes in the larger breeds its hard to see all the pups.
I don't think what i saw last night was a water sac broke- it was more like a mucus plug or something.
She really isn't eating maybe 1 or 2 bites at the most.
I just don't know if she is starting labor.

Answer

Often a little bit of mucous is all you get when the water breaks.
You can sit with her and put a hand against the side of her abdomen. You should be able to feel a stiffening of the side or a ripple if she is in labor. If its still early labor it may not be very close together so you may have to wait a bit and usually the dog doesn't mind if you do a little bit of a belly rub.
Did the vet check skull and ribcage size against the size of the pelvic opening? If not, if the x-ray was really recent, and the vet office is still open you may want to have them do so.

Normally labor starts after a big drop down to below 99F then labor begins as the temp starts rising again.

She isn't laying down unless I am with her- she just walks around and pants. She just started taking clothing items that are laying around- which she never does.
As of right now I can't see signs of contractions. I will call the vet and have them look at the exray- but... do you think they would have said something to me if there was a problem.

Answer

Yes they should have said something to you if they saw an issue.
It sounds like she is nesting which may mean she is just torturing you with prelabor signs :)
You may be up tonight having pups.
My trick to let the mom be calm on her own is to use a baby monitor in the whelping area and carry the receiver with me so I can hear all that is going on and yet let mom be calm and private if she needs that. Some of my girls prefer privacy and some want me right there with them!

Her vulva (???) was really swollen a few days ago- I would say the size of a orange. Today its down to the size of a lime. Is this ok?

I have never been able to feel the puppies move- my husband saw them move the other day.
I tried to feel today to make sure all was good- because I am a basket case and I didn't feel anything.

AWWWWWWWWW I hope all is well.
I am so nervous I hope this happens tonight.

Answer

Often you don't feel the pups until shortly before birth or not at all. I usually find they are only really easily felt when they are shifting into position for the birth canal.
With the amount of restlessness and panting you are seeing if she does not have the pups tonight I'd go for a second x-ray tomorrow just to make sure all is well. Or you can at least have the vet listen for fetal heartbeats.
The hormones usually leave the vulva expanded.
Do keep an eye on her color and if she seems off head for a vet for help.
Here's wishing you a healthy litter arriving overnight!

The vulva really isn't that enlarged anymore- Its deff. not the "normal" size. It looks like she is in heat- but a few days ago- she was very swollen. Should this be a concern.

Her color still looks good- we went for a walk and she walked well with no complaints. Her gums and tonge are still a healthy pink.

She is drinking good but not eating as much.

Answer

That could be hormonal changes as the pregnancy is moving towards delivery the hormones change.
It may actually be a bit more relaxed internally making it appear less bulky as the path opens for the pups to arrive.
Stay with her if she goes out in a yard for a potty trip too as sometimes they ask to go out not realizing the pressure is a pup and not a potty need.
I know its awfully nerve wracking waiting for pups and trying to second guess mother nature. I've spent more than one night fretting over a mother to be and every once in a while you do end up seeing a vet for a c-section - so the watching is good so that you don't miss what is happening. But its very hard on the nerves!
ps please let me know how you make out!
