Question

Two years ago I found a pup abandoned in a cornfield on our road. He has always acted a bit timid. As he got older I noticed that a lot of things startled him. A plastic bag floating off the counter, changes on the tv screen, some noises. It got worse, the vet put him on calmaclon (sp). She explained that this was temporary but we could see how he did. Not too much change. Then I put him on Relax, a natural med. That didn''t do anything either. Each time he took the meds for 3 months. This may sound weird, but sometimes I think it''s his eyesight. His pupils are always huge. Is this normal? We have a cream color carpet in the tv room and when you leave that room you step onto a runner that has a busy pattern of brown, black and cream. He almost always hesitates and acts like he''s afraid of taking that first step on the runner.

Info Request

Do his pupils respond to light equally? (in light the pupil should get smaller and both eyes should respond to the same size)

Any balance issues? Ever bump into things while walking at a slow pace?

Has the vet examined his eyes?

Is the runner on carpet too or over another surface?

Have you tried changing the runner?

Is he afraid of storms?

What types of noises bother him?

Does he play catch?

What color are his pupils? eyes(iris)? any marks on either?

I got a pen lite to check. I swear his pupils stayed the same. He always has barely 3/8 of an inch of iris.

He always stays close to me. I think I bump into him more than he bumps into things.

I've not been in since she perscribed the meds about 6 months ago. I don't think either of us was thinking about his eyes. More of a nervous issue.

The runner is on a hardwood floor that continues to the back of the house.

The runner is 45ft long. The dogs have scratched the floor so that is why it is there. Replacing isn't really an option at this point.

If I am home he is always next to me. So I don't know if storms bother him. He doesn't go and hide or shake.

Any loud noise bothers him. But so does the crinkle of a plastic bag.

He loves to play catch. Doesn't alway go to the ball tho.

His pupils look black, no film. Iris very dark brown. No scratches.

Another thing he does is in the evening if I have the light on or off in the utility room where he gets water, he will stand in the middle of the house and yelp until I go back with him to get a drink. Then when he goes in, he bobs his head and looks up like there might be something above him.

Thanks

Thanks for the additional information,

If there is no light response (or very little) it certainly is possible that there is a vision issue. His anxiety could still be the main concern as far as his behavior but if his vision is poor it would add to uncertainty. I highly recommend having him examined to determine this for sure. There are things that can be done to correct/manage certain eye conditions. While a cataract or ulcer could be clearly visible, there are others that may only be visible during an opthalmic exam. Don't ever discount what you are witnessing. You are the best judge of what changes you see. Keep a log of what happens and when- also noting the lighting at the time of the occurrence. These will help a vet determine the issue.

I would be curious to see if you covered the first portion of the runner with a solid color towel (to contrast the hardwood flooring) if it improves the situation with the rug. If the vision is off, a solid color may be helpful. Since he only hesitates (which is not a serious problem) I would not suggest replacing the rug- only testing to see if a solid pattern makes a difference. That being said, it is fairly common for dogs who cannot walk well on hardwood to hesitate before walking on a runner. I suppose the reasoning behind this is to ensure they are walking on the "safe, non-slip" portion of the floor.

Either medication you were using could be used temporarily to help, but realistically, they are designed to help with the desensitization period. First, with your boy, we need to figure out what exactly that is. Spook-proofing an already spooked animal is difficult and time-consuming. You have to start with simple exercises such as sit-stay commands for treats. Do this in the same area of the house and do so consistently. Next, do things like put tape on your shoe soles so when you go to give him a treat you can make a slight crinkling sound. Dont wait until he reaches for the treat but rather do so during the whole episode. Do this until you believe he feels comfortable. Work your way up to louder sounds (like having a plastic bag in your pocket, etc) and then work on louder noises (start with tapping and go to a louder banging.) Go very slow between each phase and always ensure to reward him in an overly excited fashion. Over time, he could become more used to the different sounds and may not be as panicked when he does hear them. The most important thing is to work at HIS pace and do so in a comfortable environment.

Hope this helps. Please let me know if you need additional information.

Best wishes to you BOTH,
Amy

You gave me several good ideas. I can't wait to try the towel on the runner to see if that makes a difference. Also my granddaughter just came over and she said his eyes looked navy blue.

Anyway I will try working with the noises. And I will also schedule another appt at my vet.

Thanks
You've been great
