Question

I'm 24, when I recieved my first DPT immunization I had an allergic reaction to the Pertussis componant and from that point on was only give the DT. I'm now the mother of a toddler and I keep reading about how important it is to get a booster of the DtaP to prevent them from getting Pertussis. Should I get one, or do I still stand a chance of having a reaction eventhough the vaccine has changed?

Answer

Greetings.

These are the few facts which one needs to know about the pertussis;

1) Neither acquisition of the disease nor vaccination provides complete or lifelong immunity. Protection against typical disease wanes/decreases 3-5 years after vaccination and is usually not measurable after 12 years.

2) The majority (almost all) of patients with pertussis who require hospitalization or develop complications are infants. Of the all reported pertussis-related fatalities, 99% are infants.

3) Older children, adolescents, and adults usually have mild or atypical illness.

So your risk for the pertussis is low and for its complications almost negligible. With your history of allergic reaction to it, it is safer to avoid it.

Hope this helps. Please feel free for your follow up questions.

Reply to Dr. Arun Phophalia's Post: So the chances of me catching it and passing it on to my 2 year old are slim? My reaction to the vaccionation was I stopped breathing for a second. My mom says that I just went completely pale and within seconds my color reappeared. I have spoke to my child's pediatrician and he said to go ahead and have it done. When I contacted the local health board they said absolutely not due to my previous reaction. They also stated that since I'm an adult my reaction could be worse this time. My main concern is my child's health. The only reason I'm concerned is that a couple of cities away from where I live, there has been a couple of pertussis outbreaks. And as I previously said I continually see ads in parenting magazines saying I need a booster.

Greetings.

I agree there are few different opinion on it. Your 2 year must have been vaccinated with DPT so, chance of you kid getting pertussis is almost nil. With your reaction of respiratory cessation, my opinion would be not to take the risk. There are adult vaccination available but efficacy (transmitting the infection from adult to child) of them is still under observation. So, I don't think there is any risk of your kid getting the infection, in the light of his vaccination.
