Question

My 22 month old son seems to have breathing issues at night. When he goes to sleep I notice he's appears to be trying to breathe thru his nose which seems "stuffy" then he appears to have slight apnea then takes a big breath with his mouth almost waking himself up. I have allergies, could he. We've tried a humidifer in the room. No pets around, but we do have many stuffed animals around the room on shelves, could that be a problem?

Info Request

Hello

Would you please give me a few more information-

How long it is there?

Does he have chronic tonsilitis? Respiratory tract infection?

The problem is only at night?

When has he been checked by pediatrician?

Does he have any other disease?

Does he take any medicine?

Thank you.

It only lasts about 2 seconds.
It happens whenever he sleeps (night or day).
No other medical issues except he did have ear tubes put in about 1 year ago for chronic ear infections.
Doesn't take any meds (he's healthy)
See's his pediatrician regularly, last time about 4 months ago.
It doesn't appear like true sleep apnea, just that he's trying to breathe thru his nose which sounds "plugged up" then he sort of gasps thru his mouth. I don't think he actually stops breathing, but just more of a snore.

Accepted Answer

Thank you for the information.

As he had chronic ear infection, there may be enlargement of tonsils or adenoid.

Though he is not having any infection of tonsils, his tonsils might still be enlarged due to previous infection.

Enlarged tonsils or adenoid may sometimes obstruct airway during sleep due to positional change.

I would advise you to get a check up by ENT specialist again for evaluation of his ear, throat and nose.

If everything is alright then you may think of allergy which have hereditary influence.

Allergy test against dust, animal fur etc may be done under guidance of an allergy specialist.

I hope this will satisfy your query. If you need further clarifications, I will be happy to explain you.
