Question

I have a Shih Tzu, born july 2005 and adopted him when he was a 8 week old puppy. I love him dearly but we have purchased an RV and my husband doesn't want us to take the dog along...in other words, we are putting him up for adoption. 2 families have already accepted to take him but I turned them both down, my heart is so broken at the thought of giving him up. My question is: Being 1 1/2 years and having had no other family, how much will he actually suffer from missing us and do adult shih tzu adapt well to new adoptive homes? If I knew that he'd be happy with a new family (that I'll make sure is a good one and will not leave him alone for long hours) then giving him up wouldn't be so hard.

Wow that is a perfect size dog to go RVing with and many people do so.
If you purchased this dog from a breeder you may want to see if they have any interest in taking the dog back or rehoming him for you.
Dogs do adapt quite well to new homes. They do miss their old families but should adjust to a good living situation well.
I do rescue which means that for years strange dogs have come into my home, adjusted here, and then gone on to new homes where they lived happily ever after. I keep in touch so I know that is how it turns out.
Because dogs are pack animals they have to be able to adjust to pack changes including new pack members, new territory, loss of pack members etc.
I'm sure giving him up will be hard and I'm not sure why anyone would require you to do such a difficult thing, or why you would have to agree.
Something you can do to help the dog adjust is to write up the commands he knows, his favorite things to do such as favorite toys or games, his favorite foods, any health issues all to give his new home the best chance at interpreting his behavior and keeping him happy.
One of the checks I do is to ask potential owners what happened to their last pet. Another is to call their vet to see if the previous pets got regular vet care. I also go and look at the home to make sure there really is a fence, or the number of pets are as stated etc.
Hope this helps you!

Thank you so much for your reply and suggestions. You know, I just may keep him!! A 10pds dog can't take up that much room in a 36ft rv.
