Question

my 12 lb dog ate chocolate about 3 hours ago. I don''t know how much - I think it may have been about 1/4 of a chocolate bunnies head - not the whole bunny- only part of the head. He threw up about 3 times and it was brown like chocolate - that''s when we realized he ate it. The last time he threw up was about 1/2 hour ago and he seems to be fine now. Do I need to take him to the vet? Should I be looking for other signs?

Answer

You can read about chocolate toxicity here to see how much of the type of chocolate eaten would be a problem
http://www.talktothevet.com/ARTICLES/DOGS/chocolatetoxic.HTM
Its excellent that he vomited a lot of it up as he won't be absorbing that into his system.
With him being 12 pounds he'd have to eat 12 ounces of most milk chocolates for this to be serious but only 4 ounces of semisweet chocolate for it to be a problem.
The above site has the side effects of chocolate on dogs listed out nicely.
Hope this helps you!

I think the bunny is milk chocolate - but I don't know how much he ate. What signs do I look for to determine if I need to take him to the vet for further treatment?

Accepted Answer

Usually milk chocolate bunnies are not that big. If you know how large it was originally in ounces that can tell you if he could have eaten 12 ounces off just the head - that would be one big bunny if he could!
From the above site
"Hyper excitability
Hyper irritability
Increased heart rate
Restlessness
Increased urination
Muscle tremors
Vomiting
Diarrhea"
are all listed as symptoms.
You can always call your vet and see what they think.
