Question

My brother has a 2004 325CI ragtop with about 26,000 miles on it. It needed a new battery so we put one in it. It started up fine, but a couple of strange things cropped up. A diagram on the left of the steering wheel came on that showed an outline of the car along with two headlight icons that were red. The headlights wouldn''t come on and the radio doesn''t work. What did we do?

Hello. I would be glad to try and help you figure out this problem. Just replacing the battery should not have caused these problems. Unless, you accidently had installed it backward for a second or had jumped the veh backward. If you are confident you kept the positive side positive and the negative negative then something else is going on. Now we should start with the headlights first. Is it the low beam, high beam, none, do the blinkers work, do the brake lights come on, do you have xenon bulbs? And do you have any kind of warrenty on the vehicle that is still in effect. Looking forward to helping you. Thanks.

Reply to BmwMasterTech's Post: The headlights don't work at all; they are the regular ones. Blinkers and brake lights work.

No warranty to my knowledge.

Hmmm. Ok. Do you happen to own a voltmeter to check powers and ground? I want you to remove the bulbs from one headlight and examing them. Take a close look at the element inside the bulbs and see if there is a break in the element. Also, did you accidently jump/install the battery incorrectly? Thank you.

Ok -I'll check that. We installed the battery as per the manual; it's pretty heavy to put in the wrong way.

I just wanted to be sure so I can now rule out wiring damage due to a battery short. We will need to check the basics to help figure this one out. And are you familiar with the use of a DVOM, digital volt ohm meter as wiring checks might be needed to help diagnose this problem. If not we can still check the basics like fuses before you will need to resort to having it checked at the dealer. Glad to help you.

Hello. I was looking up information for your radio problem. Can you let me know the options on the vehicle or let me know the last seven of the Vin so I can try to see what system you have---ie, 8 speaker 10 speaker, harmon kardon. I did find some documention on checking fuses. Also do you have the bussensess radio or do you have the multi-information display unit/ with/ without nav? Thank you.

Also I would like you to check fuses 41(30 amp) 7(5A) as this is the input to the radio control unit if it has the option I think it has.
