Hello Andy. Even a simple oil change can be difficult in some situations. Having a lift for one to perform this procedure is a great asset. Working on the ground can be difficult but this can be done.
First remove the oil fillter cap and loosen the oil filter housing ( a large socket will be needed --I think 36mm but I can check tomorrow at work for the exact size if you need it). Then unfasten the drain plug from the lower oil pan. This will be a 17 mm socket. You should purchase only a BMW filter set as aftermarket filters are NOT as good and can disintegrate. Drain the oil into a catch basin, use the copper washer to replace the old washer on the drain plug. Then remove the oil filter cap and discard old filter and also remove and replace the rubber o-ring on the cap(part of the oil filter kit). Slide the new filter on the cap housing and reinstall. Tighten down snugly. Then you will need to put about 8.5 qt of oil and check the oil level. Note:this vehicle takes about 10 qt total on one service. Please let me know if you need further assistance. A picture of the oil filter housing is below.Thank you.
