When there is real swelling (as opposed to just achiness) in you joints, then it is by definition arthritis. Whether it is rheumatoid or some other kind of arthritis can not be determined without a thorough medical history, family history, exam and blood tests. Sometimes doctors will even need to draw some fluid from a swollen joint to test it in order to make the proper diagnosis.
So yes, it could be rheumatoid arthritis but it could also be another kind.
