Question

There has been a feral pigeon in the garden that is obviously ill. It is puffed up and doesn'' t move much and has runny rather green faeces. I have provided water and some sunflower hearts for it, and it eats a little. I also took it into the house last night as the weather was cold, and kept it in a box lined with newspaper. I noticed that it also smells a bit fishy (strange!) . I have released it again into the garden, but just wonder if I can help it any other way, other than taking it in at night. It has already been attacked by a cat and a sparrowhawk..... and I don''t like seeing it suffer. It has been like this for 4 days or so. Would a vet be able to do anything?

Hello Alison. Bless your heart for trying to help it out. If you don't mind having it inside, you should being it in and leave it in, or leave it out. Sudden temperature changes can be real hard on birds. If it has any open wounds from either attack, that could ultimately be the end of it. Especially if it was the cat that made the wound. I realize that even if there is an open wound, you would have no way to know what made it but cat saliva is almost always fatal to a bird. If it gets on the feathers and the bird ingests it as it is preened off, it can make them very ill, if not kill them. If it gets into an open wound, without immediate treatment, it's almost always fatal. Birds should never be exposed to any saliva but cats in particular have so much pasturella, it very dangerous. If the Hawk did damage, then there is always the danger of other types of infection. If you can being it in, inspect it very closely, all over, for any open wounds, it's safe to try to flush them with a mixture of 50/50 warm water and 3% hydrogen peroxide. If a wound is not real deep, it is safe to use Neosporin on it. Keeping it warm, eating and drinking, are the most important things. If it is having to use it's energy to stay warm, especially if it's not eating much, that can kill it almost as quick as an infection. The closer we can keep an ill or injured bird to 85F, the better. If you have a local, true, Avian vet, yes, he/she might be able to help it, if they will accept it as a patient. You just never know without asking. Some will, some will not. I hope this will help but if you have further questions, just let me know. And good luck to you with it. Patricia
