i was arrested for accidentally picking up the wrong sports bag thinkin it was my sons, then i returned it 5 days later to the chief if police and got arrested!!!! the officer was a total jerk, and told me that i would get 6 mo to a year in jail... is this true?

CHICAGO IL... THINKNIN ABOUT ROYTEK IN MATTOON IL. WE WERE AT MY DAUGHTERS CHEER COMP. IN WAYNE CITY SOUTHERN IL. MY SON 7YRS. BROUGHT A BASEBALL BAG IN AND MISPLACED IT I WENT WALKING UP AND DOWN THE SCHOOL HALLS ASKED A GIRL IN THE AWARDS PART OF THE COMPETITION AND SHE SAID SHE HAD SEEN ON THAT WAS PLACED UP ON A LOCKER ... AT THIS POINT THE CROWD WAS GETTING TO ME, AND I TOOK THE BAG, GOT MY DAUGHTERS AWARD AND WENT HOME.. ABOUT 2.5 HOUR DRIVE. I NOTICED THE BAG WAS NOT OURS AND RETURNED IT TONIGHT TO THE "CHEIF" AND HE SAID ALL ITEMS WERE THERE BUT AND ATHLETIC SUPPORTER, AND A PAIR OF USED CLEATS... I DID NOT TAKE ANYHING OUT OF THERE!! I RETURNED IT AS SOON AS I COULD,, AND HE HANDCUFFED ME INFRONT OF MY KIDS AND ARRESTED ME. THIS BEING MY FIRST OFFENSE,, HE CHARGED ME WITH THEFT OF UNDER 300.00 AND TOLD ME THAT THE COURT COULD PUT MY IN PRISON, JAIL FOR 6MO TO A YEAR.. IS THAT TRUE? I WAS TRYING TO MAKE IT RIGHT BY RETURNING IT!!!!

I am a NY attorney. Sorry. Your attorney will have to go to court to resolve this in all probability, but he could call the DA's office in advance and get the ADA who may be assigned to the case to talk with him or her...if there has been an assignment of the case already.
Can I be frank? This is a $15 question...you have paid once. The questions keep coming.....could we consider further payments? thanks for understanding.
