Question

I am in Donaldsonville, La - Assumption Parish. My house is to be a 850 sq foot house and I have chosen brick to surround it. A man poured cement around the house to make a cement brick shelf - a footing(including the rods in the footings). An inspector says that the footing is not deep enough. What is the correct depth and width of the footing in this case? How do I know its the correct depth and width? Can you help please.

Good morning. The footing was done along with a patio and part of a driveway in 2006. The person who helped pour made sure that the footing was for the bricks. I am not in Louisiana right now, so I cannot dig it up and check, but by the looks of it from the pictures I took, it looks like the footing is 6 to 8 inches deep and maybe 9 inches wide. The footing has rods in them also. Yes the inspector did provide information - not suggestions but seemingly a requirement but not why he feels it should be the depth and width he is insisting though. I did not want to give you the measurements he gave me as I wanted to find out first from others what they considered a proper depth and width for a footing that will hold bricks.

Accepted Answer

The depth will depend on the soil in you location but normally the footing for a single story structure needs to be 12 inches deep and wide enough to accommodate the structure being placed on it. The 9 inch width sounds good but I would agree with the inspector that the depth is not deep enough. The footing as it is now will likely cause damage to any structure in time. Thank you for your answer. I will pass this on to the contractor and discuss it with him more. The inspector wanted 12 inches wide and 16 inches deep.

Answer

Thank you for the accept and the positive feedback. If the inspector wanted 16 inches deep and 12 inches wide that is what it will have to be. He will have the needed information specific to your area and what will be needed. As I stated the depth will depend on the soil in you location. If you have additional questions I will be glad to answer them. I hope you will return to Just Answer again. Please tell your friends about Just Answer.
