Question

myself and other occupants of my 1998 528i are get light headed and dizzy when using the heater with the windows closed. as a result I am looking for instructions to replace the heater core myself as I have no exhaust or air cond leaks. I am assuming the heater core replacement will take care of the fumes. any ideas on where I can get the info to change this myself?

Hi,

The directions for replacing the heater core are below. Before replacing the heater core, I would advise taking it in to have the evaporative emissions system leak tested with a smoke machine. Usually if you are getting antifreeze/coolant fumes you will either also have a leak showing at floorboard or when you turn on the defrost there will be coolant spraying on the inside of the windshield as a mist. An evaporative leak could cause gas fumes to get inside the car.

Heater core removal:

  • Remove left and right footwell air outlets
  • Remove evaporator cover screws
  • Remove evaporator cover
  • Release clips and remove evaporator tube cover
  • Release clips and remove footwell vent outlet
  • Remove heater core cover screws
  • Remove heater core(see below diagram)

Reply to eric's Post: where do I get this evaporative emissions check done? also, don't the consol and dashboard have to come out to get to the heater core and other parts? do you have instructions for that?
