I am a bad mom and pulled on my dogs collar to get him to come into the house early this morning. Now he is making a coughing/hacking sound about once an hour. Do I need to take him to the vet?

Ok, that's a good news.
I've been more worried if your dog was a yorkshire or a poddle, and aged, because they can have troubles with the trachea.
In a so big dog, it's just the little trauma that makes him cough. I think (but remember i'm not seeing your dog!) you don't need a vet. It's like being hit on the throat : it can be a little pain, and a little discomfort, but nothing serious. If it doesn't stop within a day, you can consider antinflammatory drugs (like Rimadyl, 2-4 mg/kg divided in 2 parts, morning and evening) for a few days.

Really good ones: let him access to fresh water, it can be a relief for his throat and don't worry if he drinks a little more today. You're not bad, it's a part of the relationship being a little harder sometimes.
