l have a female westie 6months old, when is the best time to get her spayed, and will l have too take time off work to look after her afterwards? thankyou Sue

Hi,
Simone there. Well, you're in the right time fos spay your little girl, and in my opinion is the best thing you can do, if you're not interested in breeding.
Spaying before the first heat is a good choice, because you reduce to almost zero the incidence of mammary tumors in the aged female dog, and will free you from the heat "side effects":a lot of male dogs under your door, dripping in your home, etc etc. Usually she will not get fat or change character.

Usually this surgery last a few minutes (15-30, depends on the skills of the surgeon) and done in a day hospital manner: you let the dog in the morning and in the evening you have it back with just a couple of suture points on the belly and perfectly awake, with no pain.
