Question

I just purchased 1998 BMW 323is Coupe. I was trying to locate my transition stick but it seems not to be there under the hood. At MIDAS they told me I have to take it to the dealer to get the transition fluid changed. My buddy owns a shop but has never worked on a bmw. If I get an instruction or a diagram, he could do it for me for much better price. Would you be able to provide a simple instruction on how to exchange transition fluid on this car? Thank you!

Hello. This procedure is not too difficult once it is explained. First make sure you have the correct fluid as this is usually is not normal ATF fluid but a special fluid from bmw. The fluid part no. is located on the transmission on a sticker and this is the type of fluid you will need for your transmission. Disregard the part of the instructions that say about the tester and getting to a certain temp. This is not needed.

First drain the fluid from the drain plug. Then fill the trans from the fill plug until it runs over. When the fluid runs over install the fill plug loosely. Then you will need to start the engine and then quickly go back, unscrew the fill plug and continue filling the transmission with the engine running. This should be done right away as quickly as possible. When the fluid again runs over the fill hole, install the fill scew and you are done.I hope this helps. Thank you in advance for your accept.

This should help. When we opened hood yesterday, we were not able to locate transmition stick. Where exactly is it located?

Answer

Ahh. I should have mentioned that too. Modern BMW's do not have a transmittion stick to check the fluid level. The only way to check the fluid is to unscrew the filler plug with the engine running and see if the fluid runs out. If it does then it is full. Unfortunately there is no quick easy way to check it. I am glad the information will be helpful. Let me know if I can help you further. Please hit the accept answer. Thank you.

Last question:
1. I see the pic of filler plug. It looks like nothing that I could see under the hood. Where exactly is the transmition located?
Thanks!

Answer

No problem. This is not something that is accessed under the hood. The vehcle will have to be placed on a lift and the transmission is located in the middle of the vehcile mounted behind the engine. It sounds like you are more used to front wheel drive vehicles by your description but since this vehicle is rear wheel drive the transmission is not attached in the same manner. Let me know if I can help you further.Thank you for the accept.
