Answer

Hi XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX,

Red swollen eyes usually indicates an eye infection and should never be ignored since some eye conditions can cause permaneent sight loss if not addressed. In the inner corner of your dog's eye is the tear duct and third eyelid. The third eyelid can prolapse and cause swelling in the corner. This is called Cherry eye. You can read more about this here:

Surgery is the preferred treatment, though your vet is likely to try drops first. I would take her to an opthamologist. I would have it replaced to it's normal position rather than have any removal done. The eye needs the tear gland and duct to keep the eye moist. With removal, you may have to use drops in the eye for the rest of your dog's life to prevent. I would also discuss non surgical methods as well with the Vet. You can read about the various methods of treatment for cherry eye on the following site.

The following two sites show surgical solutions and one discusses pros and cons of various methods.

Besides keeping the eye moist, there really isn't much you can do at home. Your pup really needs to see your vet and get at least drops to see if it will go back to the normal position or not. I would see if you can get into your vet today so appropriate drops can be started.

I hope this information is helpful to you.
