Question

I adopted a king charles spaniel, just last saturday. He was very gently and happy. However, he sleeps or lays around all the time unless I am walking him (he enjoys that) Today he has started foaming from his mouth a little and his nose is running. He just does''nt want to move at all. He is 6 years old. Since I have only had him a week, he has not gotten into any good eating habits, he is was too skinney when I got him now he will barely eat, and drinks even less although he is still urinateding. Any Idea could it be allergy''s to a new place? Help I am worried. thank you sandra

Optional Information:
Age: 6; Male; Breed: King Charles Spaniel

Already Tried:
Feeding different foods, pushing water, which he won't drink, walking him because otherwise he just sleep or lays around all the time. I have to get him to his dog food by offering something esle then practically carrying him to the food. he just doesn't seem interested in doing anything but sleeping, then now the issue with the runny nose, and mouth sort of foaming worrys me sometime he seem to have a hard time clearing it so he can breath. I don't know what to try. I have never owned a dog before

Answer

Deaar Sandra,

I am so sorry your new boy is not feeling well.

He may have ingested non food or have a bad tooth or someting stuck in his mouth.Check inside for any abnormaliies.

He may also have an upset tummy or canine flu:

http://www.thepetcenter.com/gen/canineinfluenza.html

If you think it is allergic he may have one mg of benedryl for every lb of his weight.

For an upset tummy pepto or any OTC @ www.wolfdancer.org/health scroll down for products and dosages.

His throat my be scratchy I would pick up any dog food.Try a small amount of boiled chicken with all fat drained off, cottage cheese, baby food with no onion, beef, turkey, etc

Add unflavored pedialyte to his water 50/50 to hydrate him and balance his electrolytes.

Put a drop of pancake syrup on his tongue to raise his blood sugar in case he is a bit hypoglycemic. Do not allow him to drink a lot at a time If he throws up water, he can lick ice

Keep him on that very light diet of boiled chicken or cottage cheese for 48 hours. Also give him one teaspoon a day of plain yogurt to keep "good" bacteria in his system.

He should see the vet if he gets worse or developes any breathing difficulties.

I hope I have covered every possibility. Please let know if you still have questions and how your baby is doing, I will always be here for both of you.

I hope he feels better very soon.

Happy Easter!

Very sincerely,

Terri
