Question

We got our Chiauhua shots for preparation to going into the kennel while we are on vacation. Since "lulu" received the shot she has been coughing. I took her back last night and the diagnosis was that she had a reaction to the kennel cough shot. She is on, Benydral, Robotusion cough syrup and an antibiotic. As of this moment she is still coughing. Will this stop soon, go away in a day or so or do I need to take her back to the vet?

Accepted Answer

Hello,

The Reaction should go away in a couple of days. The normal time if she actually got Kennel cough is about 14 days to run its course. The Benedryl will aid in the allergic reaction and the Robitussin Dm will help calm the cough and the antibiotic will care for a secondary infection. I would also take LuLu into the bathroom after you have steamed it up. This will help with openeing the breathing passages and give her some relief. You can also open a Jar of Vicks Vapor Rub in the room where she is staying. They Vapors seem to help ease the coughing as well. If you find that the cough has not stopped by Tuesday, at that time I would have her in for a recheck. Joan
