Question

I had my timing belt water pump and oil pan gasket replacedand when I got the car back the mpg meter under the speedometer dosent work now. It stays pegged passed the 40 mpg and doesn''t move. What operates this and what do you think could have happened to cause it not to work now. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. CRAIG

Answer

Hello. I will try to help you with this. I can always opt out if you feel I have not been helpful. I think the problem with the mpg gauge would most likely be an internal problem in the instrument cluster. The gauge is most likely stuck. I am not sure what could have caused this at the repair except that it might be just a coincidence. One thing to try would be to disconnect the instrument cluster from the vehicle and see if the gauge will drop back down. If not then it shows that the cluster is at fault due to no signal would be causing this once the cluster is removed. I hope this will prove helpful to you. Thank you.

If I am traveling along at about 30 mph and pull it back in 2 nd gear the gauge will move back to 5 mpg and stay there, if I put it back in drive it jumps right back to the pegged mark. THANK YOU   CRAIG

This certainly is a strange situation. Do you have any faults in the abs system? Not sure if it could be related. It still could be internal in the cluster but this situation might need hands on checking with and excess of diag time because the signals will all have to be checked to the instrument cluster from the Dme and the abs unit.I will check with some of the "old timers" here and see if they can give me some input.

Someone said that maybe it could be a vacuum leak, if so where would you suspect the leak.Dme and abs unit ?You are being very helpful in trying to help me solve my problem THANKS CRAIG

Hi Craig. I have a diagram I can try to scan later at home to send to you of the elctronics of your cluster. You have a printed circuit board in your cluster that goes bad over time due to age. I refered to some of the "old timers" and they have helped me. The cluster will need to be removed and dissassembled to replace the printed circuit board and usually you will be able to see cracks in the board. On your vehicle you do not have a vacuum input, this was the older vehicles that had this. I will send the wiring diagram of how the vehicle determines the fuel economy later tonite. I hope this solves the problem for you.
