Question

I recently purchased a used Compaq Evo N600c with a 1200MHz P-III. The problem is that it is only clocking 796MHz. I realize they probably used a slower processor and over-clocked it to 1200MHz. I would like to find out how to get it to reach the speed at which it should be running. It shows up as 1200MHz P-III on benchmark tests, but is not running that fast. Any ideas on how to correct this? Any help will be gratefully received. Thank you.

Hi and welcome.

When you run the benchmarks, are you on battery or 120V power?

Answer

I'll go ahead and answer anyway.

The laptop has a Mobile Pentium III processor which utilized Intel's Speed Step technology.

This saves power by running the CPU at a lower clock speed when demand is down and when on battery power.

Be assured that when you are really crunching the numbers,  the CPU will be running at 1200MHz.

You can download Intel's CPU identifier here so you can verify for sure that you have the CPU that you think you have.

So, basically, you explained to me why this machine only clocks like an 800, which I already was aware of. The question was how to get the speed out of it that I should get. This machine should clock around the 1200 mark on benchmark, as the tests check speed under load, but never runs at that speed. It is considerably slower than my friend's identical machine. Sorry, but I don't feel as though you have answered my question at all, therefore I am not spending $15 US for your assistance. Have a pleasant day, sir.
