Question

I found an abused neglected wandering stray female cat. Older I beleive, very happy and content now to just be help and loved. She has been very abused seems like as she is a bone all over. My question: Her whiskers seem to be cut vert short. Does the whiskers do this somehow at old age, I was told this is normal? I noticed today her front claws have been declawed, I did some reasearch around the neighborhood and seems as if she belonged to an elderly woman of 93 yeras old that has died 4 months ago. The family threw her out. She uses a litter box. But why are her whiskers cut and looks as if they were cut so short with scissors? Could this be possible?

Answer

Hello Alissa,

I'm so glad you were able to rescue this poor kitty.

She may have not been abused, but if she was wandering the streets, she wasn't eating well. The first step I'd recommend, is a vet visit, to find out if she's in good health, and what she needs to help her put on some weight and resolve any health issues.

The whiskers may have fallen out on their own, due to malnutrition, and are just growing back in, that's why they appear so short. Or, it IS possible that some mean human cut them with scissors, or another cat/animal, chewed them off. As you know, whiskers are important to the cat, because they allow her to gauge if she can fit into a space of a certain width.

I feel, that with TLC, a good, nutritious diet and the vet's health-check I recommended, she should start putting on weight and thriving, in your care.

A nutritional supplement, like Nutri-Cal, will provide her with extra, needed calories and energy, and a multi-vitamin like Felo-vite, would also be a good idea, considering she hasn't eaten properly, recently. Discuss these options with your vet, after she's evaluated.

I wish you both the best of luck and hope she's fattened up, real soon!
