My car, 1996 audi A6 suffered damage to the wiring harness resulting from catalyic converter being plugged, overheating and smoldering. (Opinion of the shop where my car was towed). I just spent $1500 on general maintenance including replaceing the original muffler. My car has been well maintained and very reliable. I am sick to think my car is a total loss as the shop is suggesting and the cost of replacing. Awaiting insurance adjuster. What do you think?

Hello,go to kelley blue book .com and get an average book price for your car.If any of the repairs are over 50% of the value of the car it is usually not a good investment.Considering you have already spent 1500 may be a loss to you if the insurance claims a loss.At least you will have a figure in mind on what your car is worth and go from there.Typically cars over ten years old become more in need of repairs and then the option of making payments monthly on something new verses repairs.Thanks for your question.Roger

Do you have a ballpark figure for what a catalytic converter replacement would be? My insurance company said repairs needs to come in 80% of value. Their value is not based on Kelley's but on a "market analysis" - which is below Kelley typically.

Well you can go aftermarket for about 150 plus installation or audi would be around 600 or so.Most values are market on the sales of used vehicles every quarter.
