Question

I have a 2002 Nissan Xterra, no problems with engine until now. Loud tapping on top of engine, then oil light flickering on and off. Completed oil change and added motor flush. Next day ran engine for 20 mins parked, noise at begining but faded out completely. Following day took truck for a drive and after several minutes on road oil light started flickering again but no noise??? What could it be? Oil Pump?

Reply to roger's Post: I have only 80K, no other mechanical problems. I know when I went to complete an oil change awhile back they said my oil was really bad and I might have to complete a motor flush.

Answer

Well it sounds like your oil pump screen is clogged up in the pan.the engine will create sludge over time and the heat of the engine will crystalize the old oil and clog the screen and the drain back holes in the heads.Since the flush may not work you will have to remove pan and clean the pump screen and pan.you may go ahead and invest in a new oil pump while you are there. The labor wont be much more anyway.Repair it soon because it could completely fail at anytime. Thanks for your question.Roger

Reply to roger's Post: Thank you, can I try just cleaning the pump screen first and see how that goes or replace the oil pump too. I heard that to get to the oil pump you have to remove the timing belt. I plan to do this myself with the assistance of the Haynes manual handbook. What do you think?

Accepted Answer

Well since your doing it yourself i would try cleaning.Because you get into having to time the crank and cam gears back properly.I would run the flush maybe another ten minutes or so at idle to help remove the harder deposits. You may have to pull valve covers too and clean drain back holes at the back of the heads.Take your time and you should be able to do it.Roger
