Buying beer with my other food items at Tops grocery store I had to return to the bread isle for another loaf of bread as the one I had was torn open.My girlfriend who was with me,not buying anything,I asked her to put my items on the checkout counter.Upon returning my girlfriend told me that the cashier wanted to see her ID for the beer.She told them,as I did,thatthis was for me not her and was told that BOTH of us had to show our ID''s. First time this has ever happened. WHY DID BOTH OF US HAD TO SHOW OUR ID ??

As your girlfriend may have been underaged they were required to ask for her id. As she was the one to place the alcohol down to purchase. When told that she was not the one buying then it fell to you as possibly buying for an underaged person. Thus the reason to validate your age Sir. This was legal and proper to do. There was no intent to insult you or your girlfriend. Stores are fined heavy penalties for sale of alcohol to minors by State and Federal officials. They just needed to verify the ages of both of you to make certain you were of legal age. reply if needed.

My girlfriend DOES NOT LOOK UNDERAGE,she is 38 yrs old, I showed my ID,I am 58 yrs old,born Aug 19,1949, this is the FIRST TIME this has happened,and I have seen the same thing,two people in line together but only ONE buying the beer and both of them DID NOT show any ID.

Sir I am simply attempting to answer your question with a valid answer. They can ID anyone that they please. Whether they appear of age or not. It is called verify age. It may well have been also that the employee was new and wanted to be a little over on the id's. If she showed an attitude or you feel this was wrong then speak to the store manager tomorrow on this. He can offer an explanation of their store policy for such checking of ID's. You may also contact your state ABC.
