Question

I tore down my kitchen island and I''m left with a 2-wire, non-metallic cable coming out of the slab floor (I think it''s 12 gauge). My kitchen island had 3 receptacles. I don''t need the cable anymore and I will be putting new hardwood flooring. Can I safely remove the cable, or can I just cap the wires? Please advise. Thanks.

Answer

Hi XXXXXXXXXXXXX,

Thank you for asking your question on Just Answer. You can remove the cable back to a junction box and cap the ends of each wire or remove it back to the electric panel. If the wires that are coming out of the floor were to be caped they would have to be inside of a waterproof electric box that had a way to easily access the wires.

Sounds like the thing to do is to remove the cable back to the electric panel as it is not too far away. To install a waterproof electric box I would have to drill a bigger hole in the slab for the box to fit inside. Do you agree? If so, how do I remove the cable back to the panel?

Answer

That is what I would recommend doing. Turn off the main breaker. Then you can remove the breaker and detach the wires attached to it and to the electric panel. Then you will simply have to pull the wire from that run.

I see. But how can I be sure that the wires I see out of the ground are going directly to the panel?

Info Request

Is the area under where the wires are run where you can get to them?

Do the wires have power to them at this time?

Do you know which breaker controls this wire?

Reply to Edward's Post: The wires do not have power to them at this time because I turned off the breaker 21 which is the one that controls it. The area where the wire runs is under the slab.

Accepted Answer

Once you have removed the wires attached to the breaker and removed the wires to the electric panel, you should be able to pull the wires out of the run.
