Accepted Answer

Not knowing exactly what version you have I cannot say for sure, but if you start in the very beginning of the program you should have a choice of programming, and coding. If you select programming and coding, next select coding, and what you want to do is code the IHKA control unit. After the software is done coding the control unit you can disconnect the diagnosis machine, and then unplug the heater control unit, or disconnect the battery for 30 seconds. This should change the car to Farenheht.

does one have to code the contol unit in order to change from centegrade to farenhit or can I just unplug battery? disconect heater conrol head is that what you mean by heater control unit thanks for your patience

Posted by Howie 631 days and 16 hours ago.

Answer

Yes the control unit has to be coded before unplugging or disconnecting. And you either can disconnect the battery for 30 seconds after you do this, or you can unplug the heater control head (the box with all of the heater control buttons on it).

I should ask is retrofiting another option when coding?

Posted by Howie 631 days and 16 hours ago.

Answer

yes retrofitting is another option in coding. Coding takes information out of you instrument cluster and tells the ihka what options you car has. If it was in Fahrenheit before, then coding should take care of the making the change to Fahrenheit. Only in rare cases is retrofitting needed.

are you saying that in coding of ihka change to farenheight will be automatic or I have to disconect battery or head before change takes place. thanks for your patince dont want to f**k up the coding process . Could be a disaster

Posted by Howie 631 days and 15 hours ago.

Answer

1. Code the IHKA control unit using your computer.
2. Disconnect the machine.
3. Turn the Ignition off
4. Unplugg or disconnect the heater control button wiring for thirty seconds.
5. reconnect the heater control unit.
6. Turn key on and the temperature should be in Fahrenheit.

If it does not work the first time you can always try again.

Since this is my first time doing BMW coding do I use under hood plug or ob11 in car? How complicated is it the first time?

Posted by Howie 630 days and 18 hours ago.

Answer

You would use the under the hood connector. It is not all that complicated, it is just that you are using software that sounds like to me that I have either used a long time ago, or different software that the dealer did not use. When I use software at the dealership they sometimes change the process, so I to have to use trial and error to figure out how to use it. I am trying my best to remember how the software is that I think you are using. Is their a certain point you get stuck at?

Posted by Howie 630 days and 18 hours ago.

Answer

After going to this website http://www.pcretriever.com/ I clicked on the bmw link, and I got a pdf that explained everything the tool will do, and it says that it will read and erase faults of the IHKA. Coding the control unit is something different according to the information I found this tool will not code any control unit. If the information I found is incorrect show me the correct link.

go to the j2534 interface for bmws listed in their web site

Posted by Howie 630 days and 18 hours ago.

Answer

I apologize for not reading thoroughly. Well the screen you needed for this looks like the picture on the right. At the dealer we actually have a different computer for the bottom screen, and the one on the right. So do what you need to do to get to the part of the program that gets you to the screen to the right. Once there select the programming the path to IHKA control unit. Another thing you have to remember with this program are the stipulations at the bottom of the screen (especially the battery voltage stipulation). As far as I know you have to do this through the access under the hood. I believe the wires needed for this operation is not in the obd port. If you try this and get stuck respond with where you are at and I'll try to help.

how long should this take once i start the coding process

Posted by Howie 630 days and 17 hours ago.

Answer

The entire process on BMW computers takes about a minute.

630 days and 17 hours ago.

how come the manufactores of this tool says it might take 25>30 minutes what a pain in the ass for a simple coding

Posted by Howie 630 days and 17 hours ago.

Answer

The entire process from the car not being connected to the car to fixing the car and back off of the machine should take about 10-15 minutes with the dealers machine. If I were to code a different car, ie a newer car you cannot code just one control unit and you have to code the entire car (all of the control units). Coding these cars takes longer. On top of that if any of the control units need to be programmed will be programmed before they are coded.

Yes it is a pain even for us at a dealer. Sometimes it does not work right the first time and we try something different.
