Question

Hello, I have a 1991 GMC truck. The wipers work intermittenly even though the wiper motor continues to hum. If I raise the hood and smack the circut board housing it does engage itself for awhile at least. Both arms remain in sink at all times and do not appear to be loose. Am I correct in assuming that this is a mechanical issue rather than an electrical one?

Does this happen in the high speed or low speed setting?

It happens at fast, slow or intermitten settings. At times they wont engage when first turned on and sometimes they do. Sometimes the stop in a middle of a revolution, yet the motor continues to hum. The wipers seem stationary when this happens(hard to move)but popping the hood and smacking the housing re-engages it. It used to last a couple hours this way and just got used to it but the situation has become progressively worse as in more frequent and last about ten minutes tops. The nylon gear looks to be in good shape, the spiral gear looks good but has a strange taper topards the end.

From what you are telling me, this sounds to me like more of an internal motor problem. Tapping on the case is enough to jar the internals to get the brushes to a good spot in the armature. This is normally a telltale sign of an electric motor failure. Honestly though I would disconnect the windsheild wiper regulator and verify that it is no binding or anyhting of that nature. In all though I think a remanufactured wiper motor will cure this problem. If you decide to do that, make sure that you get the one with pulse. I have seen many part stores sell the incorrect two speed model and that causes for some real strange occurences. Feel free to contact me wiht any questions, problems, or if you would simply prefer a second opinion. Good luck!
