Question

Today my 1998 F-150 only blows cold air from the vents. No heat at all even though the coolant lines into the firewall are hot. Is there a heater control valve and if so, where? Any other ideas?

Info Request

There is not a heater control valve on your vehicle.

1. Are both heater hoses hot? If one is cold then the heater core may be glogged. Most liley you have a problem with the temp blend door motor/actuator.

2. Is there any noise (clicking/popping) from the dash when you switch the heater control from hot to cold then back to hot?

3. Check fuse #5 (15 amp).

The problem is going to with the temp control switch or temp blend door motor. You are going to need a digital volt meter to perform some test. Do you have a volt meter, and do you know how to use one? Or you can take a guess and install a new temp blend door motor.

Check the items listed above, and let me know if you want to perform some diagnostic routines, or if you instructions on how to replace the motor, or both.

This will take a few e-mails to resolve this issue, but I can help you until you concern is resolved.

Thanks for the ideas. Both coolant hoses are hot as is the hose to the top of the radiator. I checked the fuse and it is OK. I get no clicking as I rotate the temp control switch.

I warmed up the engine this morning and the vent only blew cold air. As I keep the engine running the air slowly changed to hot. Then I rotated the temp control to cold and the air stayed hot. Seems like your suggestion of a temp blend door motor might be right. What do you think? My Haynes manual doesn't tell how to replace the motor. Can you tell me if you agree that may be the problem.

Info Request

Yes I agree, I would go ahead and change the blend door motor, and double check a few circutis during the process of changing the blend door motor.

I will reply Sunday morning with direction.
Do you have some tools?
Also a volt meter would be great, so that we can check the circuits for the belnd door motor. There is 10% chance that there is a electrical concern that could be the cause, or part of the cause. If you have to take the time to fix your vehicle, it is always nice to take a few extra steps to make sure, you don't have to fix the same concern again.

Answer

Install the blend door motor, and check the opertion before you put everything back together. If it works good then reinstall all removed parts if there is still a problem then reply and I will walk you though some diagnostic procedures.

Also, check to see if the blend door is binding when you have the actuator removed.

Thanks for the information concerning the blend door motor. Here is some more info that may help before I try to change the door.
Yesterday I drove the pickup for a longer period of time and find that with the temp controls set for A/C and turned to cold, the A/C works for a while and all of a sudden turns hot. If I turn the system off for a short while it will be cold again when I turn it back on.

When I start the engine I usually get a door ajar light on the dash and yet all doors have been shut good. The overhead light is also on for a while. Looks like I have some electrical problem. Could that be effecting the operation of the heat/AC system? Maybe I should get the electrical working good and see if the heat/AC is still a problem.

I have lots of tools and a digital voltmeter if you can tell be how to debug the door shut switches.

Thanks,

Answer

Most likley you have a door ajar switch that is sticking, the trick is to find which door it is, sometimes you can cure the problem by lubricating the door latches with wd-40, the switch is attached to the door latch. After lubricating the latches open and close the doors several times and see what happens.

Is your truck a reg or super cab?

Let me know if this helps, if not then we will have to remove both door trim panels and access the door ajar switches.

Both of your concerns are typical for your vehicle (10 years old).

I will take some time on Monday to give you some steps to check the temp control switch and blend door motor.

How is it going? Have you had a chance to work on your F150? I have been busy with snow and work, so I have not had a chance to follow up with you. Let me know if you have done anything yet
