Vasodilation of blood vessels in the scalp can cause a unilateral ("left side of head") hypersensitive and tender scalp. This often precedes a migraine headache in patients predisposed to migraines.
Treatment includes analgesics such as Tylenol, antiemetics, anti-anxiety agents, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Advil or Aleve, ergots, steroids, major tranquillizers, narcotics, and triptans. Preventive therapy includes anticonvulsants, calcium channel blockers, beta blockers, antidepressants, serotonin antagonists, and botulinum neurotoxins.
