Question

I have a 2005 GMC Sierra Z-71 half ton crew cab short bed and the other day I tried putting it in 4x4 low and it wouldn''t go it would go into 4x4 hi, then when I was done I put it back into 2wd everything seemed to work until I was about five miles down the road and while driving 55mph the truck seemed to go into neutral, the gear shifter on the column was still in overdrive and the push button 4wd selector showed it was in 2wd, so I stopped on the side of the road and the only way I could get it to move was to put it in 4wd hi and it moved and felt like it was in 4wd hi so then I put it back in 2wd and it seemed like it was in 2wd, tried it in drive and reverse everything seemed ok so I continued down the road and stopped to get gas. When I started the truck and put it into drive it would not go again I had to put it in the Auto 4wd mode to drive it home everything sounds o.k. but it acts like it is just not fully engaging in 2wd mode and it still will not go into 4wd lo?

Reply to Greg's Post: When I put it into 4wd hi that light blinks about 5 times then stay lit up and then when I put it back to 2wd that light blinks about 5 time then it stays lit up, when it acted like it when into neutral while driving the 2wd light stayed constant no flashing like there was a problem or anything when I first start the vehicle all of the 4wd light come on then go off except for the gear the t-case is in.

Accepted Answer

Ok, one thing I have seen with these auto 4wd's is the encoder sensor goes bad ion the transfer case motor assembly. This will set a code 327 in Auto transfer case data but will not turn on a service light. This sensor lets the ATC module no the position of the transfer case as far as2wd or 4 hi 4low ETC. When this sensor malfunctions it can do what you have experienced. the only true way to know is to have it checked by a reputable shop with a TECH 2 GM scanner to read the encoder voltages and check the operation of the switch assembly. If the sensor is bad it will run you around the 150-250 range to replace depending on shop rate in your area!
