Question

Approximately 9 days ago, I found an injured stray pigeon in new york city ... the injury is to its left foot or leg. The pigeon seems to be thriving on the wild bird seed and daily water I feed it, but my girlfriend is anxious for me to let the pigeon "free", in spite of the bird''s injured foot/leg because the pigeon is in her studio apartment! How or where can I get free med. diagnosis and treatment for this injured bird?

Hello. Good for you, trying to help this poor bird. Unfortunately, you are not going to find any free help for it. In this case, since they are considered "nuisance" creatures, you probably cannot even turn to a wild life rehab person for help the way you could with some other type of wild creature. The only way you might be able to get any professional care and treatment will be if you can locate an avian vet who will work with it but it will not be free. Whether it will survive if you turn it loose depends very much on the extent of the injury. If there are no broken bones and no serious open wounds, it will probably survive and even learn to compensate for a minor handicap, should it turn out that way. Many birds and parrots, both wild and caged can be surprisingly adaptable when needed. For example, I know of some parrots who have no feet, yet with proper alterations to their cages, learn to do very well. If the bird has an open wound but is not a deep injury, it is safe to use Neosporin on it. The wound can also be cleaned with a mixture of 50/50 warm water and 3% hydrogen peroxide. That can help keep down the risk of infection until it heals. Since I can't see the injury myself, you will have to use your best judgment for if and when the bird is ready for release. When the time comes, the further you can take it into the park of other similar area, where ever there is the least amount of human interference, the better it will be for the bird. You can easily test it's ability to perch by providing any kind of limb. Even if it can only perch with one foot, the odds are pretty good it can adapt. I hope this helps you out but if you need anything further, just let me know. Patricia
