Question

Our cat is experiencing signs of possible IHL (Idiopathic Hepatic Lipidosis) - We''ve taken him to the vet had blood work done, found out he began with a urinary track infection, leading to rodent ulcer in the mouth, which has caused yellowish/orange color in his ears. He''s very lethargic, sleeps all the time, has lost his apptetite. We are currently giving him steroids and forcefeeding him as well as giving him water through a sirigne. He was prescribed an antibiotic, Baytril 22.7, for the urinary track infection, but every time we give it to him with his food, he vomits three to five hours later. What can be done if he does have IHL? Is there a cure? Can we treat for this and will he be back to normal? If so, how long? Thanking you in advance for your time and I look forward to hearing from you. We really need your help!

Dear friend,

I am so sorry your baby is so ill.

First change the baytril for clavamox or clindamycin

UTI's are serious in males because they are caused by sticky crystals in the bladder. At any time they can block the urethra.Since this is going on a while Cats are very stoic animals so he may not cry out.

If he becomes unable to urinate that is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY . His bladder could burst and he would have to be catheterized to save his life.

UTI's must be treated with an effective broad spectrum antibiotic like Clavamox or clidimycin and for a long enough duration so all bacteria is eradicated. If not, they will refluorish, stronger and more resistant and reinfect him. In addition, the bacteria can become tolerant of the same antibiotic so the medication should be varied for best results.

Get him started on DENOSYL ASAP:

Steroids are hard on the kidneys so he should be weaned off as soon as he is stable.

Although overweight can cause diabetes and other health problems, it is very dangerous for a cat to suddenly lose weight. That is because a cats liver becomes accustomed to a certain caloric intake. If that amount is cut (for any reason) the liver will think it is starving and grab protein and fat from the cats muscles and organs. This can cause liver and organ failure, muscle wasting and lead to a weakening of the immunity and a disorder called Hepatic lipidosis:

Rodent ulcer:

FEED FEED FEED! every two hours!

Boiled chicken, fish A/d baby food with no onion etc.

Use plain pedialyte instaed of water.

I will always be her for you and your boy.Let me know how he is doing,

Sincerest best wishes,

Terri

He is not overweight cat. He was slim to begin with, but now he has lost weight to the point where you can tell.

Any weight loss throws the liver into shock and brings on hepatic lipidosis.

Feed him high proten like meat fish chicken or baby food every two hours!!

Unfortunately, Logan did not make it. The Vet stated this illness started to take a toll on his liver and she indicated by his behavior (he was limp . . like a rag and couldn't stand up or hold his head erect) - that since his liver count had been low to begin with, this illness just sprouted the liver even more. She said it would be better to put him down rather than to try and cure him because he would probably relapse. We took her advise and did what she recommended. Thank you for your input. I also have another cat and we will do everything to keep her safe. Thanks again for lending an "ear".
Gratefully,
