i have an 97 buick park ave with 3.8 v-6,engine has a knocking sound,irratic like balance shaft issues?no oil contamination of metal,and engine does run rough when you let off the throttle,does smoothen out,but still getting the noise which can be knocking to rattling sound?got some ideas?

welcome to ja ill try to help
check the harmonic balancer they are rubber & metal and they are bonded together what happens is the glue breaks down between the metal and the rubber and it gives the sound you are talking about hopefully its as easy as that if not you might be talking a teardown to find cause of failure

timing chain possibly but have you looked at the balancer

Reply to john's Post: ok,i did look at the balancer and it looks to be intact and nothing seperating.is there some way to tell if the timing chain is bad without a complete tear down,and,would there be enough reason to think that with that being the case,would it give the balance shaft trouble?
