My Maltease is 12 yrs old. In the last 2 weeks she has had loose stools, semi firm and the last little bit that comes out is almost gel like. She has been drinking alot of water, and she eats her kibble as she always has. what could cause this?

Hi,

There are a myriad of reasons that semi-firm type diarrhea can happen. I am concerned about the drinking of water, which could indicate dehydration or some other metabolic condition. It is good that she has a great appetite as little dogs will go off their food easily.

Mild diarrhea can be from a disease inside the intestinal tract or something elsewhere in the body causing a problem in the colon. She could be losing water through the loose stools causing her to drink more water, but that can't be determined without bloodwork and a urinalysis (at least).

Occasionally dogs will get into food they are not used to and will have diarrhea. However, 2 weeks is a long time for this to happen. Due to her age and the length of the diarrhea, I would have a diagnostic workup performed to help get a diagnosis.

In my clinic, a workup would consist of bloodwork, urinalysis, fecal exam to check for parasites, x-rays of the chest and abdomen and many times an abdominal ultrasound. However, most clinics will just start with blood work and a fecal exam.

Sorry I can't give you a diagnosis from here. It could be something as simple as parasites or a more serious condition.

I wish you well.
