Question

I have a York Stellar gas furnace model # M2UF032SA. It is loud when it fires up--kind of a rattling noise. Is this normal? Also, I can set the thermostat at 70 but it will indicate the room temp at 3 to 5 degrees lower. It also only runs for maybe 20 seconds per cycle. How important is thermostat placement(it''s behind my frony entry door) and my sofa is over the cold air return. Is anything I''ve mentioned here of concern?

Reply to Edward's Post: Hello,
I don't know the age of the furnace (Iwas hoping the model # would give you some indication). I've lived here for 3 years and I've not had the furnace professionally serviced during this time.
When it kicks on, it sounds as if it's rattling at first, then when it starts blowing, it only lasts maybe 20 to 30 seconds thens shuts down. It doesn't seem to be warming the house sufficiently. I'm thinking it may be because either the thermostat is faulty or that my sofa is over the cold air return, or both. I do have a digital camera and I could send photos if needed. I haven't taken any action to correct.
Thanks

Answer

Many homeowners do not realize, the complications of not having a professional inspect the heating system yearly, can cause. If a fire, or worse, is caused by the furnace and there are no records of the furnace being maintained, the insurance company can and will deny the claim for damages. I have worked on systems after they have caught fire and the homeowners got no help from their homeowners insurance for the damage. I have installed furnaces in new homes that the owners were building to replace a home that was destroyed by fire from not having the furnace serviced. I like every customer to have this information to consider before repairing the furnace themselves. It is very important that all air returns not have their air flow blocked in any way. From what you have told me it is not an indication of a defective thermostat. Of the top of my head would be the flame sensor needs cleaning. Click here for information on the flame sensor and how to clean it. It would help if you could tell me what happens at the furnace when the thermostat calls for heat. A picture or pictures of the furnace, with the service door removed, will help me point the parts that may be causing the problem, to you. The pictures can be uploaded by clicking the green icon that looks like a tree in the advance tool bar above the place where you are typing your information.

Should you require further clarification, never hesitate to ask. It would be my pleasure to clarify my answer to your question. If after reviewing the above information, you have additional questions, I will be glad to answer them. My goal is your 100% satisfaction with all questions I answer.
